Patricia Booher, NP

Patricia is a Tennessee native, and joined the staff at Dermatology & Skin Cancer Consultants in April 2015. She is a licensed Advanced Practice Nurse, receiving her Masters of Science from Vanderbilt University and certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, in 2000. Patricia is also dermatology nurse certified through the Dermatology Nurses Association and holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee.

On her move back to Jackson in 2000, she went to work for her uncle, Dr. Sterling Ruffin Craig, a local dermatologist, for almost 7 years. Upon his retirement in 2007, she purchased his practice, and ran it for 8 years before coming to work at the clinic. She is qualified to examine, diagnose, treat and prescribe therapy for any of your skin care needs. Because of her compassion and true caring of her patients, there are some patients who, even after moving out of state, make a trip to Jackson for an annual checkup, coming from Missouri, Mississippi, Indiana and even Louisiana.

Patricia’s professional memberships include the Tennessee Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Dermatology Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society.

She has been married to her husband Mike for 14 years. They have one son, Jake, who is enrolled at the University School of Jackson. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, crafting and cross stitching.

What is an NP? A Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has completed advanced coursework and clinical education beyond that required of the generalist registered nurse (RN) role. An NP/APRN is a registered nurse who has acquired the knowledge base, decision making skills, and clinical competencies for expanded practice beyond that of an RN. They manage acute and chronic medical conditions, both physical and mental, through history and physical exam and the ordering of diagnostic tests and medical treatments. NPS are qualified to diagnose medical problems, order treatments, perform advanced procedures, prescribe medications, and make referrals for a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions within their scope of practice. The Nurse Practitioner works with physicians, medical surgical specialists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to achieve the best outcome for patients.

NPs are trained in the nursing model. The program is a combination of both didactic and clinical training. The NP course is rigorous and intense. NP education includes instruction in core sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, physical diagnosis, pathophysiology, microbiology, clinical laboratory science, behavioral science, and medical ethics.

Physicians entrust duties to NPs. Within those range of duties, NPs use independent-decision-making for patient care. This team model is an efficient way to provide high-quality patient care. By design, physicians and NPs work together as a team. In the state of Tennessee, NPs practice medicine with physician supervision. Dr. Carranza communicates with her NP and PAs daily. All Dermatology and Skin Cancer Consultants Nurse Practitioners undergo intensive training prior to seeing their own patients.
